Uma Thurman (born Uma Karuna Thurman in Boston, Massachusetts, on April 29, 1970) is an American actress and former model. From action and science fiction to dramas and romantic comedies, she has held a variety of leading roles in a range of films. She was nominated for an Academy Award for her performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction, which put her on the map. Originally, Uma was hesitant to star in Pulp Fiction due to the rape theme. At 23 years old, she felt frightened, but ultimately signed on after being convinced by Tarantino. She has since reunited with Tarantino in 2003 for both Kill Bill films, which revitalized her career. She also holds a Golden Globe and an MTV Movie Award. Uma is currently starring in NBC’s drama The Slap as Anouk, a television writer.

Personal Life:
Uma’s mother, Nena von Schlebrügge, is a former fashion model who is now a psychotherapist and runs a retreat. Uma has been twice married and since divorced actors Gary Oldman and Ethan Hawke. She has two children with Ethan, daughter Maya Ray and son Levon. Uma also has a daughter, Rosalind, with a French financier to whom she was engaged before breaking it off. As a philanthropist and activist, Uma has participated in the “End Gun Violence Now” campaign and is on the board of Room to Grow, which provides aid to impoverished children and families.
