Natalee Holloway was an 18-year-old girl from Mountain Brook, Alabama who gained international attention when she disappeared on a school trip to Aruba in May 2005. Her disappearance sparked a long investigation that led to prime suspect, Joran van der Sloot, a 17-year-old who was visiting Aruba at the same time she was there.
Although Natalee’s family, including her devoted mother, Beth Holloway, flew to Aruba and worked hard for years at doing press conferences and trying to find answers about what happened to Natalee, she was never found alive and her body was also never located. Joran, who remained the only suspect in Natalee’s disappearance, was never arrested due to lack of evidence, but in 2012, he was convicted to 28 years in prison for the murder of Peruvian woman Stephany Flores. In 2023, he was also convicted to 20 years in prison for extorting Beth after he promised to tell her where Natalee’s body was in exchange for $250,000. He made headlines that same year when he confessed to killing Natalee on an Aruba beach on the last night of her school trip.
