For nearly twenty years, ‘NCIS’ viewers watched Mark Harmon take down the villains and save the day. Take a look at photos of the man behind Secret Agent Gibbs.
Born Thomas Mark Harmon on September 2, 1951, the actor who would bring life to Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs first made his mark – pun intended — in the 1980s. After scoring a few acting roles in the 1970s – including parts in Emergency! and Laverne & Shirley – Mark experienced his professional breakthrough after landing the part of Dr. Robert Caldwell in St. Elsewhere. The role would raise his profile (and ultimately earn him the title of People Magazine’s ‘Sexiest Man Alive’ in 1986.)
After St. Elsewhere, Mark spent the rest of the 1980s and ‘90s on television, appearing on a series of programs including Reasonable Doubts and Chicago Hope. In 2003, Mark began portraying Special Agent Gibbs in episodes of JAG, essentially spinning the part off into NCIS. He was a series regular until season 19.
