Marchánt Davis — Marchánt Davis is an American actor who most recently starred in The Great Society on Broadway, as Stokely Carmichael. A sequel to Robert Schenkkan’s Tony-winning All The Way, The Great Society follows President Lyndon B. Johnson and chronicles the high-water mark of the programs of the Great Society, and the growing tragedy in Vietnam. Before hitting the Broadway stage, Marchánt starred in the Chris Morris india film This Day Shall Come, which was a social satire also starring Anna Kendrick. In the movie, he played ‘Moses,’ an impoverished Haitian preacher who is offered cash to save his family from eviction. He has no idea his sponsor works for the FBI who plan to turn him into a criminal by fueling his madcap revolutionary dreams.

Early in 2019, Marchánt was in Jordan E. Cooper’s Ain’t No Mo’ Off-Broadway production, which was met with rave reviews and several A-List viewers through producer Lee Daniels.

On Playing Stokley Carmichael — “It’s really exciting, especially right now in today’s climate in society because I think what Stokely was getting at with black power wasn’t like ‘overthrow the government, kill people.’ He was basically saying that in counties like Lawrence County, Alabama, these people were the majority. The black people there were the majority but didn’t hold any power in office. So, he tried to start a separate party outside of the two party system called the Lawrence County Freedom Party and through movements, through practices like that, he coined the phrase “black power” because he thought, in order for change to happen we had to be in the mood to see about it. We can’t leave it up to chance for somebody else to do.”

The US government gave black citizens a choice to either take a one way reparations flight back to Africa or change into someone else, and through a series of vignettes you see how people cope with that decision. I like comedies, I like comedies that have something to say though. I like comedies with consequences.”

On Working On ‘This Day Shall Come’ — “It’s based on an actual group of people, this group of Haitian Catholics. For me it was about shedding light on those guys. When I got the script for the first time it felt like Christmas. You’re flipping through and like, ‘Wow, I can see that. I get to do that, I get to do that and I get to do that.’ But also, it was really exciting to sort of see how vulnerable he was.”
