Bio:
Stephen Colbert (born Stephen Tyrone Colbert in Washington, DC on May 13, 1964) is an American comedian and late-night host. Stephen grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, in a household that valued intellectualism. Stephen trained himself to suppress his southern accent as a child, imitating the speech of news anchors. Stephen developed an interest in acting and journalism in high school, participating in several school plays and writing on the school newspaper. His interest in acting increased while attending Hampden-Sydney College in Virginia. Stephen would transfer to Northwestern University to study as a theater major. While intending to become a dramatic actor, Stephen fell in love with comedy and improvisation. After graduating in 1986, Stephen enrolled in the Second City improv theater. There, he met Steve Carell, Amy Sedaris and Paul Dinello. He worked with the latter two on the short-lived Exit 57 sketch show, before working with Steve on The Dana Carvey Show. In 1997, Stephen had his big break – first when he starred in the alternative comedy series, Strangers With Candy and when he was hired on to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show. Stephen stayed with the Daily Show until 2005, when he began hosting The Colbert Report. The show ran for nearly ten years, with the final episode airing in December 2014, eight months after it was announced he would take over for David Letterman on The Late Show.
