UPDATE 12/18/23 6.24 PM EST: Amid Jonathan Majors’ guilty verdict on December 18, PEOPLE confirmed that Marvel Studios is set to “cease working” with him. The news that the studio dropped him was released about an hour after he was found guilty. Majors previously starred in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania earlier this year and was set to appear in the next Avengers movie.
Additionally, following the verdict, one of his defense lawyers released a statement to PEOPLE in which Majors said he intends to clear his name. “It is clear that the jury did not believe Grace Jabbari’s story of what happened in the SUV because they found that Mr. Majors did not intentionally cause any injuries to her,” the statement read on Monday.
“We are grateful for that. We are disappointed, however, that despite not believing Ms. Jabbari, the jury nevertheless found that Mr. Majors was somehow reckless while she was attacking him,” the note continued. “Mr. Majors is grateful to God, his family, his friends, and his fans for their love and support during these harrowing eight months. Mr. Majors still has faith in the process and looks forward to fully clearing his name.”
ORIGINAL STORY: Jonathan Majors was found guilty of one count of reckless assault in the third degree and another count of harassment in his trial on Monday, December 18, according to The Hollywood Reporter. He was facing four charges in the trial. The six-person jury had deliberated for about four hours. He had pleaded “not guilty” to all of the charges.
In addition to the two guilty verdicts, Majors was also found not guilty of one count of assault in the third degree and the other charge for aggravated harassment in the second degree. The Lovecraft Country star, 34, was seated with his family, lawyers, and girlfriend Meagan Good when the verdict was read. He can face up to one year in jail from the charges, per NBC News. His sentencing is set for February 6.
The charges were brought against him after he called 911 in March after he found his ex Grace Jabbari unconscious in their apartment, via Variety. She claimed that Majors had injured her finger when he forcefully took his phone from her hands after she saw a text from another woman on the screen. The charge Jonathan was found guilty on was for the incident in the car. She had alleged that she couldn’t sleep due to the pain and took two sleeping pills, but she later woke up in the walk-in closet.
Jabbrai testified early in the trial and spoke about the actor’s “violent temper.” She claimed that he had yelled at her while discussing a past relationship. She also recalled another instance where the actor allegedly began breaking things in their home after she went out for a night with her friend. She also said that he would threaten to commit suicide. An audio recording of a message from Jonathan was also played. “I’m a great man. A great man. I am doing great things,” he said in part. “The woman that supports me, the one I support, needs to be a great woman…and make sacrifices.” The Creed III actor did not take the stand.
