Texas GOP Senator Ted Cruz brought up new details about the repercussions of his family trip to CancĂșn on the latest episode of the conservative podcast Ruthless. The Republican lawmaker, 50, discussed the trip that has brought on a waive of intense criticism, and disclose his wifeâs reaction to the leaked texts that revealed more about their reason for the trip. The recently leaked text messages, obtained and published by The New York Times, highlighted exchanges that Cruzâs wife, Heidi, had with their neighbors. âI will say, Heidi is pretty p***ed at that,â Cruz said of his wifeâs text messages being leaked.
The Senator also described how Heidi âactually was over to a neighborâs house yesterday, sort of walking throughâ the exchange between herself and their neighbors. âWeâve got a number of Republicans who are neighbors, but we also have a number of Democrats,â he said. He continued on, revealing that there were some âfolks on our street who put up Beto [OâRourke] signs, which I thought was a little rude.â
âYou know, I didnât, like, hold a victory party on their front yards when we won,â he said, clearly annoyed. Cruz even went a step further in his comments, and seemingly directed his ire towards Democrats. âHereâs a suggestion: Just donât be a**holes,â the senator said. âYeah, like, just, you know, treat each other as human being, have some degree, some modicum of respect.âThe comments come nearly a week after photos of Cruzâs family boarding a flight at Houstonâs George Bush International Airport to the glamorous destination surfaced. Initially, Cruz said that he was simply escorting his daughters â Caroline, 12, and Catherine, 10 â to CancĂșn and immediately returning to Texas to address the ongoing lack of heat, power, and necessary resources throughout the state, with millions of Texans affected.
âWith school canceled for the week, our girls asked us to take a trip with friends,â the GOP Senator said at the time. He also stated he would be, âflying back this afternoonâ when pressed about his return to the state on February 18. The leaked text messages, however, highlighted that the trip was seemingly meant as an escape from the Cruz familyâs âFREEZINGâ home.
Cruz has since referred to the trip as âa mistake,â and that he did have âsecond thoughtsâ upon boarding the plane. But three days after returning from Mexico, Cruz was trolled by Twitter users as he handed out water to constituents, calling photos of the senator as examples of âfake compassion,â and a total âphoto op.â Meanwhile, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was praised for her work, raising roughly $2 million for Texans affected by the major power outages across the state. In the time since, Cruz has continued to try and do damage control for his ongoing PR nightmare, mostly to his own detriment. But Cruzâs press tour discussing the trip has brought on further criticism, memes, and more.
