UPDATE (Dec. 15, 2020 — 6:53pm ET): Just hours after first clapping back, Lizzo took to Instagram on Dec. 15 to post both a video and lengthy message about doing “what you want with your body”. In a lengthy caption alongside the photo below, the singer wrote, “I detoxed my body and I’m still fat. I love my body and I’m still fat. I’m beautiful and I’m still fat. These things are not mutually exclusive. To the people who look to me, please do not starve yourselves. I did not starve myself. I fed myself greens and water and fruit and protein and sunlight. You don’t have to do that to be beautiful or healthy. That was my way. You can do life your way. Remember, despite anything anyone says or does. DO WHAT YOU WANT WITH YOUR BODY.” See both that photo and the video below.
ORIGINAL STORY: Lizzo has issued a response to the critics of her decision to do a 10-day detox ‘juice cleanse’. The singer faced major backlash for the ‘cleanse’, as fans thought it was her way of giving in to the pressure to slim down, despite years of urging followers to love their bodies at any size. After seeing the criticism online, Lizzo posted a video to reveal why she actually did the ‘cleanse.’
@lizzo Big girls do whatever u want with your bodies!!! I’m just as proud of my results from my smoothie detox as I am of my belly curves and swerves ❤️
“November stressed me the f*** out,” Lizzo admitted on TikTok. “I drank a lot, I ate a lot of spicy food and things that f***ed up my stomach. I wanted to reverse it and get back to where I was. I’m so proud of myself. I’m proud of my results. My sleep has improved, my hydration, my inner peace, my mental stability, my f***ing body, my skin. I feel and look like a bad b****. I think that’s it. I’m a big girl who did a smoothie detox. I got exactly what I wanted out of it and every big girl should do whatever the f*** they want with their bodies.”
Hours before posting this response, Lizzo shared the results of her ‘detox’, which is when the backlash began. She posted a video to TikTok, which showed a daily progression of her body over the ten days of the ‘cleanse’. In the clip, she admitted that days four, five and six were the toughest, but said she never actually felt hungry while filling up on the smoothies. Lizzo reiterated in her response video that the cleanse wasn’t done for “dramatic weight loss” — it was just a way to get herself feeling better after falling off-track in November.

Of course, Lizzo has never been afraid to clap back at the critics. Throughout her years in the spotlight, her body has been touted as ‘unhealthy’ by haters, but she’s always maintained that she lives a healthy lifestyle and is confident and proud of her figure. Over the summer, Lizzo even revealed that she had started following a vegan diet, with her meals consisting of smoothies, salads, hummus and mushroom balls, to name a few.
