Michael J. Fox is undoubtedly one of the most beloved TV actors out there, but even he has had some regretful moments during his career! The five-time Emmy winner, 59, chatted with Jimmy Fallon during the November 18 episode of The Tonight Show, where he confessed the difficulties he had while sitting next to the late Princess Diana at the London premiere of Back to the Future. “It’s true, the world premiere in London. She’s sitting next to me and the lights go down,” the actor illustrated the scene, which he discusses in his new book No Time Like the Future.
“And the movie starts, and I realize, I’m one yawn — fake yawn — and an arm stretch away from being on a date with her,” Michael jokingly told the late night host. “But then what happened,” Michael continued, “The movie started and, also, I had to go pee,” he confessed. “And, so, for the rest of the movie, I’m sitting there, like, dying. I can’t say anything to her and I can’t walk away from her because I can’t turn by back on her.”
The Family Ties alum described his whole situation as “agony.” But he did reveal that the evening “could have been the greatest night of my life. But it was just a nightmare.” Fortunately, the ’80s star shared that the night was made brighter by Princess Diana’s reaction to the movie. “She seemed to laugh, a couple of times,” he shared. The Back to the Future star also confessed that he “didn’t realize” he’d be sitting next to the Princess of Wales until “the movie started.”“The seat next to me was empty, and we were all standing because the royals were coming.” Michael revealed that, at the time, he didn’t think that “[Prince] Charles wants to sit next to me through the movie,” but was elated to find out that the fashion icon and humanitarian would be joining him for the film! “She was great. She was sweet,” Michael said of the late Princess, who died in 1997 in a fatal car crash in Paris.
While the personal tale is incredibly entertaining, the story didn’t make the cut for the latest season of Netflix’s The Crown. The fourth season of the Emmy-winning show has been lauded by fans and critics alike, as it introduces Princess Diana (played transcendently by Emma Corrin) into the royal family fold. With this new tale of Back to the Future in mind, we may never watch the film the same way ever again!
