This piecey, shag cut is retro yet modern, and tons of Hollywood heavyweights like Hailey Baldwin, Cara Delevingne, Julianne Hough and Emma Stone have recently rocked this ‘do. Mad Men‘s January Jones showed off her sexy new style (with bangs!) on March 8. The shag is the style of the year, so far!

Rodney Cutler is a haircare legend and this is what he told us about the trend: “The key to getting a shag cut that looks cool and modern is to tailor the cut to your hair type. If you have thick hair, ask for lots of layers so that the weight is taken out (or else you risk the dreaded “soccer mom” hair). If you have fine, straight hair make sure the layers are a bit choppy and not too seamless in order to achieve that piecey feel.”

Here are some styling tips from Rodney!

“Avoid blowing the hair out with a round brush. Air dry or heat style — the layers look best straight or wavy!

Use the Cutler Protectant Spray ($24.00, cutlersalon.com) for frizz control and to protect the hair.

Add volume to key sections of the hair, focusing on the roots and avoiding the mid-lengths with the Cutler Volumizing Spray ($24.00, cutlersalon.com).

For a textured matte look, break the layers up and use Redken Wind Blown 05 ($19.00, Ulta.com).

Finish the look with Redken Rough Paste ($19.50, Ulta.com) by applying it to the ends for separation and definition.”
