“There’s nothing in his world that would ever make me do cocaine or heroin or any of that stuff ever again,” Corey, 45, told PEOPLE after the firestorm of comments following his Sept. 15 appearance on the TODAY show. Corey insisted he’s been sober for 25 years, with his young son, Zen, 12, motivating him to stay away from drugs and alcohol.

That’s where my love is and where my heart is. There’s no time to mope around or to be depressed, because I have to be a positive influence on him. That’s what’s most important,” he added. “I look at his beautiful smiling face and I say, ‘I’ve got to stay strong for him. No matter how mean and awful people can be, I can’t let that affect me.”

Corey found out firsthand how “mean and awful people can be” after he performed “Go 4 It” on the TODAY show. Along with online commenters trashing the Stand By Me actor’s performance, his new album, Angelic 2 The Core was called “the worst album of 2016” by The Needle Drop. “It’s been really painful,” Corey said in a Facebook Live video following the online backlash. “I’ve never had such mean things said about me – like constantly.”

Thankfully, Corey has a guardian angel looking out for him – and her name is Miley Cyrus! The 23-year-old knows a thing or two about getting dragged over bizarre performances, and she penned a heartfelt open letter to Corey. “Please enjoy life and continue make art,” she wrote. “You’re absolutely right to ignore (even though it can be hard) the hurtful comments made by uninspired people!”

It’s a good thing that Corey has Miley as a “guardian angel” because he unleashed hell on Krystal Khali, a former member of his backing band, Corey’s Angels. When Krystal quit just days ahead of the TODAY performance, a furious Corey left her a nasty voicemail where he called her “selfish” and “egotistical.” Huh. Maybe the next time Corey loses his chill, he’ll remember his son Zen and avoid making any more angry phone calls.

What do you think about Corey claiming his son has helped him stay sober for 25 years, HollywoodLifers?
