Initially police officials gave Jason some time to grieve the shocking loss, but Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls revealed to PEOPLE that he sat down with the widower for an in-depth interview to go over the series of tragic events. During the interview, Jason told authorities that he and his wife, Christy, engaged in an explosive argument, in which he told her that he wanted a divorce.

Motivated by rage, Christy shot her daughters in cold blood following a fight. Christy pointed the gun at her family, as they were heard crying and pleading for their lives from a 911 call. Christy, who reportedly experienced a number of mental issues, shot and killed her daughters in order to teach her husband a lesson. Christy was shot and killed on the scene following the tragic deaths of Madison and Taylor.

While Officer Nehls noted that Jason is still trying to make sense of the incident, he says the widower “has some support from his family.” But in addition to family and friends, Jason has support from the thousands of people around the nation who were moved by his tragic story. Many of his supporters flocked to his social media account to express their deepest condolences and words of encouragement, after Jason posted a sweet collage of his girls, and an image of a biblical scripture.
