Yes, Josh Charles returned for the series finale of The Good Wife. It began when Lucca was the voice of reason of course, asking Alicia, “Who do you want to come home to? Every night? Who do you want to see when you open your door?” Later, her imagination ran wild.
With Regina Spector‘s “Better” playing, she thinks of herself walking in to see Jason (Jeffrey Dean Morgan), waiting with wine and a kiss; then Peter (Chris Noth), with the same… and yes, then with Will. But he stuck through the episode, as the voice of reason: it was time to leave Peter, and go to Jason. She asked herself, “What do I do now?”
Will: “Go to him; you’re done with Peter. Like a fever, it’s over.”
Alicia: “Jason’s not you.”
Will: “Very few people are me.”
The scene ended with the goodbye she deserved to give him. “I’ll love you forever.” His answer: “I’m okay with that.”

Our sister site TVLine was the first to report the news of Josh’s return. Josh came back to film “a newly-created flashback sequence” with Julianna Marguiles. As we all know, Josh’s character, Will Gardner, was killed off in season five; He was shot dead by his client (Hunter Parrish). Fans believed Alicia and Will were endgame, but it was not meant to be.
Josh returned to The Good Wife to direct an episode, but this was the first time Josh reprised his role as Will onscreen. What a fantastic send-off for an incredible show.
