‘The DUFF’: Robbie Amell & Mae Whitman Talk Chemistry
Bianca and Wesley are childhood friends who team up to save her from the clutches of being a perpetual DUFF (Designated Ugly Fat Friend). The movie is a new generation Mean Girls with a She’s All That twist.
The sharp and funny chemistry between Robbie and Mae was key to making the movie work. They both agreed that the movie’s “Think Rock” scene was their favorite moment, and Mae revealed that’s where she and Robbie had a fun and sweet moment.
“It was so beautiful and it was such a rare day in Atlanta where it was raining and we were in this forest,” Mae told HollywoodLife.com. “It was so peaceful and we were hanging out by this lake, and we carved our initials into a bridge there.”
That’s adorable! However, Robbie fully admitted that he was on edge before reading with Mae before shooting the film.
“I was actually super nervous to chemistry read with Mae,” Robbie told HollywoodLife.com “I was intimidated. She’s done so much work with so many unbelievable people. I figured if I could make her laugh I’ve got a shot…I told her a really inappropriate, alternate joke and got her to crack up. From that point on we’ve just been really good friends.”
Well, it certainly showed in The DUFF!
‘The DUFF’: Mae Whitman Is A Real-Life Bianca
Mae will be the first person to tell you how closely she relates to Bianca. She told HollywoodLife.com how proud she is to be the voice for all the people out there struggling with acceptance issues.
“I brought so much of myself to the character,” Mae told us. “It was amazing. This movie is about the struggle that people that are beautiful all over the place are made to feel like they should be put into some weird box by other people who are just insecure and threatened by them, and they just try and tear you down. I have been put in that box so many times. All different boxes, been called all kinds of names in my life. You just have to let that go. None of that is real.”
The DUFF hits theaters on Feb. 20. Be sure to into HollywoodLife.com for our podcast featuring Robbie Amell!
