Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt: Our Characters On ‘The Hills’ Were ‘All BS’

Heidi & Spencer are returning to TV! On Dec. 9, the dynamic duo will sit down with E! for 'Heidi & Spencer: After Shock.' However, HollywoodLife.com caught up with them first where they spilled all their dirty secrets! Spencer Pratt is not the monster he was made out to be on The Hills, he told HollywoodLife.com in an exclusive interview. Heidi Montag and her husband cleared the air and revealed how they feel about Lauren Conrad getting married, Heidi's plastic surgeries, and having children -- they even shared what the last "real moment" on The Hills was!

While The Hills was a reality show, it was only the real life of Lauren, Heidi and Spencer said in a new exclusive interview. “We were on someone else’s show from their narration,” Heidi told HollywoodLife.com. “Lauren really narrated The Hills. It wasn’t necessarily the reality of what was going on — it was her reality of how she viewed something. It was one girl’s perception of her reality. We had to do a lot of things that aren’t necessarily true to who we are. We just played into these character.”

Spencer even added that they both got carried away with the characters they were playing — but their true friends knew the real Heidi and Spencer.

Heidi Montag & Spencer Pratt: We Had To Play Crazy People On ‘The Hills’

You said no one knows the real you, Spencer. Do you now regret ever doing ‘The Hills?’
SP: I was so thankful to be paid, I would pretty much be paid to say anything. It just got out of hand when we had to compete with the dirtiness of the Jersey Shore. We’re not about to start peeing on dance floors, pooping on bushes. I’m fine with saying mean things and supposedly leaving Heidi on the side of the street, you know when its all 90210-y. But not when we were competing with jungle juice. I don’t regret it because I knew exactly what I was doing and it was so much money — it wasn’t a real world. We were getting paid to pay pretend!

What about you, Heidi?
HM: I do with some things. I wish I stayed more true. We got caught up in it being a real show — I wish I would have stepped back and said [to the producers], the REAL Heidi would NOT have done this.”

SP: But in Heidi’s defense, Heidi WOULD say that to them, and they’d say, ‘Well you’re not gonna be in this episode, you’re not going to get paid. We were employees. You know you can notice it on certain episodes. We’re on some episodes for a min and thirty seconds. You can clearly hear when we weren’t playing ball with them. If we tried to not ‘do their world,’ they wouldn’t keep us in.

Was the crystals all part of that character?
SP: I got an email from the president and vice president of the network once I brought the crystals into the place — my whole logic was the new-age trend. I could be the face of the new age hippie. I initially went in like ‘I’m gonna take this look. They had guidos, I’m gonna be the crazy LA hippie!’ And then I get an email and it all caps it says, ‘SAW THE NEW CRYSTAL STUFF. IT’S AMAZING. I LOVE IT.’ They threw gasoline on my fire. I turned it up before turning it up was the cool thing to do. But I got way too deep into my character. I was really doing that yoga! It makes you energetically act weird, not negatively. But mixed with that and the jewelry with all these stones… it was way too far.

What about the ‘Heidi can’t watch TV’ stuff?
SP: “That was all part of the “new age” life. All the ‘Heidi can’t watch TV, go online’ stuff… it was all BS that i was trying to put out there.

HM: “They’d tell us to stay in character on and off set. But we were so deep in our characters, we let them merge.”

So were you really enemies with all the cast?
SP: When I hear that they ended it when everyone turned against us, I think its awesome. I never knew we had any allies. We never were invited to and Hills parties, finales, carpets. Lauren [Conrad] would not have it. We were banned from doing any filming with the rest of the cast. It wasn’t even our choice. It wasn’t the storyline. It was controlled by the producers, telling us ‘Lauren said you weren’t allowed to be here.’ I understand that, though on Lauren’s part. That’s the reality of it all. I still feel the same about Kristin [Cavallari] as I did when she introduced me and Heidi. She’s still one of my favorite people. We just weren’t allowed to sit with her because she’s on the ‘cool’ side of the show.

Was anything you guys did real?
HM: The realest part of it all was when [Lauren] told me I had to chose between her and Spencer. She sprang that on me on camera — that was real. I didn’t want to chose, but she made the decision for me. And the producers were on her team, because it was her show.

So you’re not at all who people think you are.
SP: Well, we’re not actors. I used to tell producers, ‘It will be more entertaining to hear what we’re really saying, not what your BBMing us. If you’d just let us flow.’ That’s where the first excitement in The Hills, when I first joined with Heidi. All that stuff was genuine. They got so excited they had to mess with it. It’s like artists. Just let the painting be. They just sabotaged the essence of their reality. Fake Spencer is way more boring than real Spencer. You saw a little bit of real Spencer on Celebrity Big Brother and in the jungle.

Spencer On Heidi’s Transformation: We Were Tricked Into It All

Heidi, you’ve gotten three different surgeries done to your breasts. Give me the size timeline.
HM: I was an A cup, then a C cup, then an F cup, and now back to a C cup. I went in this time and said, ‘Make them as small as possible.’ But the structure had collapsed. He originally didn’t think I’d be able to have them this small but it was kinda a miracle. Oh and this is a different surgeon than the one who did my first two procedures, he has sadly passed away. It is Dr. Jay Orringer‘s  — a reconstructive specialist.”

Do you regret it?
HM: I certainly wouldn’t do it again. It was a moment when I got really caught up and was nieve. My doctor glorified it. I didn’t understand the repercussions, the damage it would do on my body. I’m very thankful that I can correct it and am fortunate enough to stop the damage at the point that I have.

Spencer, how do you feel?
SP: It’s definitely frustrating. Before the surgeries, everybody still loved Heidi for who she was, and all the surgeries — regardless of how they look — the stigma has taken away from why I fell in love with Heidi. It upstaged why she became famous to begin with. It’s hard for me because I know how much I love her and the world should love her that much. But the surgeries — you think she did the worst thing in the world and nobody can make mistakes. I watched how fast it changed. We were there so early in the morning, just for the larger breasts, and all of a sudden there’s a pencil out, and he’s saying ‘we we could do this this and this while you’re under.’ It was 6 in the morning. We don’t get up that early usually and we were already stressing out. It all happened so fast. Originally, a backup dancer elbowed Heidi, so she needed to get her nose adjusted, and then she thought, ‘If I’m already going under, I might as well go for bigger boobs.’

Wow. Now that you’re healthy, does that mean you want to have kids soon?
SP: Heidi talks about it all day every day! She points out every little kid in the street! She mentions it throughout the day everyday. I don’t think either of us have real careers. I look at families and the world and providing — right now we don’t have to worry about it. But to add on how to afford kids to go to private school, to have clothes, to go to college… I have no concept of how any of that stuff is possible! To me that’s not real until we have a career and we can totally provide — it’s not fair to wing it. I don’t want my kid to be like, ‘Daddy, my friend’s dad’s a doctor, and my other friend’s dad’s an executive. What do YOU do daddy.’

So what do you want to do?
SP: For my career? Ideally — any career that has longevity! If I get this insane offer to do, I can’t say no.

And Heidi? Is your dream career in music?
SP: Album no. 2!
HM: If someone else pays for it! My real passion is music. I go around singing all day long! I’m sure it gets so annoying, I’m a living musical for Spencer! Creating the album was really fun, I feel really blessed to be able to have that experience. If theres an opportunity, I would again. I would like to do a music video for each of my songs! I love each song so much! They’re all like a jewel!’

Heidi: ‘I Would Go To Lauren’s Wedding’

People want to know — you had so much of the cast at your wedding. Whose weddings from The Hills would you go to?
HM: Definitely Kristin. I would go to Audrina’s, I love her. I would go to Lauren’s if she invited me but I don’t think that’s happening. Whether she was paid to be there or not, she physically showed up herself to mine. Stephanie [Pratt]’s — I would hope to be a bridesmaid!
SP: Brody!

So you and Brody are friends again?
SP: Brody’s the best friend I could ever dream of having. He knew everything was manipulated and I got so deep into my character and there was no turning back. He has background nobody else knows.

Maybe you two can get an E! spinoff since he’s on Keeping Up with the Kardashians.
SP: He’s the best thing thats ever hit the Kardashians!

That’s not all — Spencer and Heidi have a lot more to say! You can catch it all when you tune in to E! for After Shock: Heidi & Spencer on December 9 at 10 PM!
