Callie Torres (Sara Ramirez) got a big fat wake up call on the Nov. 14 episode of Grey’s Anatomy. As if she couldn’t bear anymore craziness in her life, Callie was sued and tried in court — and yet, that wasn’t the most shocking moment of the night. Let’s dig in!

Callie Gets Served

No, your eyes weren’ deceiving you. Grey Sloan Memorial’s premier orthopedic surgeon was sued by Olympic athlete Travis Reid for negligence in a series of surgeries that caused him to lose both of his legs!

Flashback to four months before, when Travis wanted Callie to build him a new hip: He wanted this brand-new Peterson hip that would get him back on his feet for the Olympic qualifiers. She openly admitted that she didn’t have experience with this hip, but went ahead with the surgery anyway.

During the surgery, Travis’ heart rate dropped to a scary level, and Callie had to close up before she could find the last sponge. He came back a few weeks later with a nasty infection. (Seriously, when I say nasty, I mean nasty!)

He also had a small heart murmur, and his foot was turning grey. Cristina (Sandra Ohargued that she should have the first run at surgery, but Callie insisted. When will people ever learn that you always go with Cristina’s word?! After the surgery, Callie thought it was all good, but soon discovered his feet were black. By that time, it was all over. Callie had to amputate both his legs!

Law & Order: Callie Edition

So, it’s safe to say that Callie wasn’t having the best of times. She was incredibly nervous, but thankfully, she had her friends there to support her. She got owned by the defense attorney for the majority of the trial, but did get one moment of reprieve when Arizona (Jessica Capshaw) showed up in the bathroom and handed her a picture Sofia drew. So sweet!

Jo (Camilla Luddington) and Cristina both took the stand and didn’t exactly provide testimony in Callie’s favor. Then, Travis went on the stand — and it was brutal. He was charismatic and just plain adorable. His testimony was nothing of short of devastating, and Callie felt so much guilt. He said it was Callie’s fault that he lost his legs and that without them, this was “the end of my world.” He also admitted that Callie confessed her guilt to him.

Callie also made her way to the stand, saying she would have left the sponge in again if she had to do it again. She believed the sponge didn’t compromise the joint — yet Callie was dealing with some major tragedy at the time.

The verdict came back and Callie was found not guilty. As a Grey’s fan, I hated this. It seems like Callie always gets off with a slap on the wrist! But I digress.

However, before the verdict came back, Callie found a letter from the Peterson clinic that revealed they stopped their trial because of infections. Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) told her to forget about the letter and Callie took her advice and threw it away at the courthouse.

Heartbreak & Forgiveness

All during the Travis surgery debacle, Callie and Arizona were dealing with the effects of a possible new addition to their family. Arizona got pregnant, then lost the baby, which devastated both Callie and Arizona. However, when it came time to address Callie’s priorities during Travis’ surgeries, Callie said she only had Travis on her mind. (Lies!)

The episode also had flashbacks to right after Arizona’s cheating. Papa Carlos (Hector Elizondo) came to Callie’s side to comfort her, but eventually provided her with some words of wisdom that Callie took into consideration in the present day. Before Callie was born, Carlos cheated on Callie’s mom, but she forgave him. He said they were stronger than one mistake. Callie took his advice and showed up at Arizona’s door. She confessed that she wanted to give Arizona another shot and she should come home. Arizona closed the door and told Leah (Tessa Ferrer) to get out. Ouch, Arizona. And the #Calzona fans rejoice!
