And don’t think for a second the cast wouldn’t welcome back “Leyton” with open arms. Sophia continued:
“I said, ‘But even if Peyton can come! Of course we want to see the baby — Sawyer would be two years old — but even if Sawyer was sick and had to stay home with dad! Like, if he’s shooting a movie, can’t she come by herself?’ But it turned out that Hilarie was also working. We really tried, and we of course would have been thrilled because their characters were big parts of our story. It doesn’t always work. So for the fans out there who always ask me on Twitter to get the bosses to ask them back, they’ve been asked back… but scheduling conflicts are scheduling conflicts.”
Sadly, that wasn’t the last piece of bummer news Sophia had for us. If you’re hoping for a ninth season of One Tree Hill, you might want to stop reading, because Sophia sounded less than confident that we’ll get one:
“As far as we all know — and as far as we’ve known from the beginning of the season — this is it,” she said. “Nobody’s told us otherwise. I think it’s that desire to quit while you’re ahead and not run it into the ground. We still have a very good thing going. I would always say, ‘Never say never,’ but as far as I know, I don’t think so.”
Fortunately, not all hope is lost. Though the series is likely coming to an end this May, we might be getting a feature-length finale to tie up all the loose ends!
“We’ve all talked to Mark [Schwahn] and said, ‘If this is going to be the end, do you think we could do maybe a two-hour finale — like make it a special like a movie, but obviously on TV,'” Sophia told us. “I think there’s definitely been some consideration of that, but I think because the official decision hasn’t been made, they haven’t decided. I would hope we would at least get two hours to wrap up eight years of story.”
But it wasn’t just a big night for One Tree Hill spoilers. Sophia and Austin attended the ceremony receive their own award for Entertainment Design, presented to the couple by Ed Norton for their environmental philanthropy and activism. Other honorees included Arianna Huffington, Wade Green and the Lincoln MKZ Hybrid.
