Every year, the President of the United States is presented with a live turkey ahead of Thanksgiving. During George H.W. Bush’s reign as president, it became customary for the presidents to ‘pardon’ the bird before the holiday to spare the animal’s life. In 2020, Trump participated in his final turkey pardon at the White House. He pardoned a turkey named Corn from West Liberty, Iowa.
The pardoning came amidst Donald Trump’s ‘lame-duck’ period. He was not elected for a second term during the 2020 election, but will remain president until Joe Biden’s Inauguration in January 2021. Trump was joined by his wife, Melania Trump, as well as his daughter, Ivanka Trump, her husband, Jared Kushner, and their kids at the 2020 Turkey Pardon.
