Self-partnered no more! Emma Watson has been in a longtime relationship with her boyfriend Leo Robinton. She was pictured kissing this mystery man outside Gail’s Bakery in Notting Hill in London in October 2019, when speculation about Emma’s relationship status started swirling. Emma has always been reticent to share details about her personal life. The actress has cultivated a unique career that transcends work in film and extends to activism, education, and combatting social injustice.
An ardent feminist, Emma has always been transparent about how she feels toward certain issues. But when it comes to her personal life, Emma has been guarded, and for good reason. As she continues to foster her relationship, learn more about Leo Robinton and how he and the Harry Potter star began dating, and how they’re romance is going today.
As previously mentioned, Emma and Leo’s relationship went public in the fall of 2019, when the twosome were spotted sharing a kiss while out in London. Some fans, however, became even more confused when Emma shared in the December 2019 issue of British Vogue that she was proudly single. “I never believed the whole ‘I’m happy single’ spiel,” she told the outlet. “I was like, ‘This is totally spiel.’ It took me a long time, but I’m very happy [being single]. I call it being self-partnered.”
Of course, Emma did feel the societal pressure of being nearly 30 and single, at the time that the interview took place. “I was like, ‘Why does everyone make such a big fuss about turning 30? This is not a big deal…’ Cut to 29, and I’m like, ‘Oh my God, I feel so stressed and anxious. And I realize it’s because there is suddenly this bloody influx of subliminal messaging around. If you have not built a home, if you do not have a husband, if you do not have a baby, and you are turning 30, and you’re not in some incredibly secure, stable place in your career, or you’re still figuring things out,” she shared. “There’s just this incredible amount of anxiety.”
With all of the discussion about her single status, it’s important to note that the profile may have been conducted over the summer of 2019, before she and Leo started dating. At the time, Emma shared that she was dating, but didn’t have a serious relationship. “Not one specific person,” she revealed of her dating status, but clarified that she was “going on dates.” It seems that the two may have met through friends, as well, especially considering Emma’s aversion to dating apps.
“Dating apps are not on the cards for me,” she told British Vogue. “I’m very lucky in the sense that because I went to university and because I’ve done these other things outside of film, my friends are really good at setting me up. Really good. And what’s really nice is some of my best friends are people I got set up on a date with and it didn’t work out.” Emma hasn’t spoken about her love life publicly since that interview, however, fans have still seen the two out and about.
As it would happen, though, it seems that the couple is doing everything they can to keep their personal lives as private as possible. Leo is not on social media, and Emma’s Instagram account has been dormant since June 2020. Although the two are making concerted efforts to keep their romance private, the Daily Mail seemingly reported that, as of April 2020, the two were very “serious” about their relationship. “Emma and Leo did everything in their power to keep their relationship private,” a source told the outlet, who added, “After they were pictured kissing in October Leo removed himself from all social media in an attempt to protect their romance.”
The relationship became so serious that Emma reportedly introduced Leo to her parents. The actress “introduced Leo to her parents [Jacqueline and Chris]” because “she was really serious about him,” adding that the parties “went for a meal together back in December at The Ivy restaurant in St John’s Wood not long after Emma and Leo first met.” Naturally, Emma’s team would neither confirm nor deny Emma’s relationship status. “I’m afraid I do not comment on speculation regarding Emma’s private life,” Emma’s rep told Daily Mail.
So, where do Leo and Emma stand today? Well, the couple actually created quite a stir in February 2021. Emma was photographed embracing Leo upon the couple’s return following a pre-Valentine’s Day trip to Mexico. The two were dressed quite casually at the Los Angeles airport, and wore protective face masks amid the COVID-19 pandemic. While the photographs were snapped, some noticed a certain piece of jewelry on Emma’s left hand.
The actress was seemingly sporting a ring on her left hand’s ring finger, causing some to wonder if the two were engaged or had already tied the knot. After the pictures circulated, a report from the Daily Mail seemed to insinuate that Emma was stepping back from acting, and that she “has gone underground, she is settling down with Leo. They’re laying low. Maybe she wants a family,” according the outlet’s source. Emma’s rep later confirmed to Entertainment Weekly that Emma’s “social media accounts are dormant but her career isn’t.” Emma has not made any public statements about the status of her relationship or her career.
As for her thoughts on marriage, Emma has always been incredibly deep about the history behind the institution, and the types of relationships she’s learned from in order to know what a healthy, fulfilling, and equally balanced relationship looks like. “I think one of the actual really important things that modernity did was to suggest that this contractual nature of marriage was not the only kind of marriage to have, and that there was in fact a different template based on equal partnership, equal respect, equal consideration that could be a far more healthy, prosperous, and happy type of relationship than you’ve seen previously,” she said in conversation with Sex and World Peace author Valerie Hudson, per Elle. Clearly, Emma knows exactly what she wants from a relationship, and fans are happy to see her thriving.
