Was ‘Mamma Mia 3’ confirmed? Find out what actress Christine Baranski said in a new interview and see all updates about the potential sequel, here!
My, my, how can the Mamma Mia! cast and crew resist making a sequel? Since 2018, fans of the musical film franchise have been dying to know whether Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Christine Baranski, Julie Walters, Dominic Cooper, Andy Garcia, Cher and more stars would reunite for a third installment. While the ensemble hasn’t confirmed that they’re working on Mamma Mia 3, Christine recently spilled an optimistic update.
Hollywood Life has rounded up all the details about a possible Mamma Mia 3, below!
While speaking with The Hollywood Reporter in August 2024, Christine — who played Tanya in Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — dished that franchise producer Judy Craymer already came up with the storyline for a sequel.
“I was in London with Judy Craymer at our favorite watering hole,” Christine told the outlet, before adding, “She is planning Mamma Mia 3. She gave me the narrative plotline of how it’s going to happen. That’s all I can say!”
Christine then pointed out that this is not an, “Oh, I wish it could happen!” situation because, “Judy Craymer makes things happen. She made number two happen, and it was a phenomenal hit. I wouldn’t put it past Judy Craymer to get everybody back together.”
The actress also quipped that she “hopes” the cast will “all be on some fabulous Greek or Croatian island having a blast.”
Since the storyline is only in development, the production process hasn’t even begun. Therefore, a release date is unknown. If production officially begins in 2024, then the film could have a potential release date of 2025 or 2026. However, it appears the producer has been working on the film’s plot for years.
In 2020, Judy spoke with Daily Mail about her thoughts on a third movie. At the time, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the musical producer got “hit with COVID fog.”
“I think one day there will be another film, because there’s meant to be a trilogy, you see,” she told the outlet. “I know Universal [Pictures] would like me to do it.”
Based on their previous comments, the cast is fully on board with making another film! During a past interview with Radio Times, Amanda said, “Beyond yes,” to shooting another movie. Even Christine added at the time, “We’re ready for the next sequel because it’s just so much fun to do.”
