Katharine McPhee and David Foster have one of the most beautiful love stories in Hollywood. They met on American Idol in 2006 and developed a friendship before things turned romantic once they were both single. After getting married in 2019, the lovebirds expanded their family with the birth of their son, Rennie.
Recently, Katharine, 39, revealed that “therapy” is the key to her successful marriage with David, 74. “I really feel like you can talk through most everything, but you have to have the language, the vocabulary to do that,” she told E! News in October. “So that takes practice and self-awareness and having skills to facilitate those conversations.”

2006: Katharine and David Meet on American Idol
The couple worked together on season five of American Idol, where Katharine was a contestant, and David was a guest mentor. He helped Katharine prepare for her performance of Whitney Houston‘s song “I Have Nothing,” which David co-wrote. At the time, David was one year removed from his divorce from Linda Thompson.
February 2008: David Performs at Katharine’s Wedding
On February 2, 2008, Katharine got married to Nick Cokas — and David was there! The music producer played the piano at the wedding ceremony at the Beverly Hills Presbyterian Church. Katharine had invited David to perform at the wedding since they were friends at the time.
September 2017: Katharine and David Spark Dating Rumors
By the end of 2017, Katharine was divorced from Nick, while David split from wife Yolanda Hadid. Both newly-single, Katharine and David attended the Grammy Museum’s third annual gala in September 2017, sparking dating rumors. Two months later, they attended a Los Angeles Lakers game together and then were seen kissing after having lunch in Beverly Hills. However, the stars denied that they were dating.
May 2018: Katharine and David Make Their Red Carpet Debut
Katharine and David’s relationship became official by the time the Met Gala rolled around on May 7, 2018. Katharine told Entertainment Tonight that she and David were having a “fun date night” at the event.
July 2018: Katharine and David Get Engaged
David proposed to Katharine while they were vacationing in Italy. Katharine confirmed the news with a screenshot of her texts to JustJared founder Jared Eng. “He did it at the top of this mountain in Anacapri. Totally dark, only stars. Thankfully he didn’t push me off the cliff. He said it was one or the other. And in the end he spared me,” the texts read.
Katharine later shared a picture of her engagement ring and wrote out a special message about her dad Daniel McPhee, who died shortly after the singer got engaged.
June 2019: Katharine and David Get Married
The couple said “I do” at the Church of Saint Yeghiche in South Kensington, London on June 28, 2019. Katharine wore a custom Zac Posen wedding gown and then changed into a white off-the-shoulder gown. She had on a blue strapless gown for the reception later in the night. David, meanwhile, looked handsome in a black suit.
The wedding marked Katharine’s second marriage and David’s fifth. He was previously married to B.J. Cook and Rebecca Dyer prior to his marriages to Linda and Yolanda.
December 2020: Katharine Confirms She’s Pregnant
Two months after reports said Katharine was pregnant, the “Over It” singer confirmed the news with baby bump pictures on December 16, 2020. She wore a blue coat and used blue emojis in her Instagram caption to hint that she was having a boy.
“Katharine and David have been trying to get pregnant for months and so this is something they were planning for a while now,” an insider EXCLUSIVELY told Hollywood Life in late 2020. “Katharine has always wanted to start a family with a loving husband and have children, so for all of this to happen is her dream come true. She couldn’t be happier and can’t wait to start the next chapter as a mommy.”
February 2021: Katharine and David Welcome Their Son Rennie
The happy news of Rennie David Foster‘s birth was shared on February 24, 2021. “Katharine McPhee and David Foster have welcomed a healthy baby boy,” a rep for the couple shared with People. “Mom, Dad and son are all doing wonderfully.”
Since giving birth, Katharine has shared many adorable photos and videos of her son on social media. When Rennie turned 2 in February 2023, Katharine shared a special tribute to her baby boy and celebrated life as a mom. “Happy 2nd Birthday to my baby Rennie. The BEST 2 years of my life. I guess being a mommy means your heart aches forever!! I want to stop the time,” she wrote.
