Here are five things to know about Sonequa Martin-Green, 31.
1. She will play a lieutenant commander on the highly-anticipated CBS series Star Trek: Discovery.
Sonequa is the first African-American woman to be cast as the lead of a Star Trek crew — she will quite literally be steering the ship! Original showrunner Bryan Fuller has described her character as not a captain, but a “lieutenant commander with caveats”, per Entertainment Weekly. “We’ve seen six series from the captain’s point of view,” Bryan said. “To see a character from a [new] perspective on the starship — one who has different dynamic relationships with a captain, with subordinates, it gave us richer context.” Sounds good to us!
2. Sonequa currently stars on The Walking Dead.
She’s best known for her role as Sasha Williams in the AMC drama series, but has also been on The Good Wife and Once Upon a Time. Star Trek: Discovery will air in May, and Sonequa will continue her role on TWD. Phew!
3. She’s married to Kenric Green.
Sonequa also acts on The Walking Dead, and they have one son together named Kenric Justin Green II.
4. Sonequa almost wasn’t an actor!
She originally was thinking of becoming a psychologist, but ultimately decided to pursue an acting career — and boy, are we glad she did.
5. She has also had roles in several films.
Yep, it’s not just about TV for Sonequa. You can catch her in Toe to Toe, Rivers Wash Over Me and Yelling to the Sky, too!
