Life in the hustlin’ and bustlin’ city of Los Angeles wasn’t for Jason Lee, 49, and so, he decided to relocate to Texas with his wife and two children. Upon arriving in Denton, TX — a quaint city known for its artistic and creative vision (kind of like Austin) — Jason realized that Scientology, like LA, was a part of his life that he wanted to leave behind, as he aimed to fit in with the new locals. There has been talk of Jason opening up his own Scientology church in Denton, but he insists that’s false.
“Being that we don’t practice Scientology, and that we aren’t particularly interested in opening religious centers in general, we have no plans to open a Scientology center,” he confirms to Us Weekly. “We’re not here to buy up or change or take over Denton.” While the church may have benefitted Jason’s life in a multitude of ways, his ex-wife, Carmen Llywelyn, claims their decision to join the religious group was a huge factor in their 2001 divorce.
Said to be quite a controversial religion, The King Of Queens actress, Leah Remini, also left the church in 2013. Unlike Jason, Leah’s departure was the opposite of subtle, as she made headlines for dissing the church, and their leader, David Miscavige. Following the release of Going Clear (a documentary about Scientology that packed a lot of shock value), Leah came forward to explain why she left. “No one is going to tell me how I need to think, no one is going to tell me who I can, and cannot, talk to,” she elaborated to Business Insider.
