What happens when you bring a Broadway cast to national television? A mind-blowing performance! The cast of the 2016 Tony Awards Best Musical nominee Waitress showed their acting and singing chops off to the world with a dual performance of their songs “Opening Up” and “She Used To Be Mine,” proving that they are one heck of a team. We still can’t get over how incredible that was!
Starting with the upbeat number “Opening Up,” the cast gives a glimpse into the apron-wearing, pie-filled world of Waitress. But then the performance transitions to the heartfelt ballad, “She Used To Be Mine,” with the show’s composer Sara Bareilles making a cameo playing the piano and singing the tune. The performance finished with the star, Jessie Mueller, closing out the song with some powerful vocals. Going from such a fun song and finishing with a heart wrenching tune, the cast really showed their impressive versatility!
Waitress was nominated for four Tonys, and some of the night’s biggest awards at that! Not only was it up for Best Musical against the likes of Hamilton and School Of Rock, but its stars were also up for Tonys for their lead performances — Jessie for Lead Actress and Christopher Fitzgerald for Lead Actor. On top of that, Sara was also nominated for Best Original Score! Between all of those nominations and a performance, that’s not a bad way to be included in such a major award show huh? (Especially when it’s the year of Hamilton!)
As if the Waitress performance wasn’t great enough, the 70th Annual Tonys were filled with one great show after another. Starting off with host James Corden‘s brilliant opening number, the excitement never stopped with performances from the casts of Hamilton, The Color Purple, Spring Awakening, and many more. Even if the Waitress cast can’t come out with a win, we’d say they won enough to be part of such an amazing night!
