Congratulations to Jamala! The Eurovision 2016 winner, 32, slayed the competition with her performance of “1944,” and now the whole world is talking about her! Of course we wanted to find out more about this talented artist from Ukraine. Click through for five facts we’ve gathered about Jamala!
1. Her real name is Susana Jamaladinova.
Jamala was born in Osh, Kirghiz SSR, on August 27, 1983. She’s a spinto soprano and started singing at the age of 9. She began going by her stage name when she dedicated herself to music full time.
2. She won Eurovision with a total of 534 points.
Jamala and Ukraine won Eurovision 2016 with 534 points. Australia finished in second place with 511 points. Russia came in third with 491 points. Way to go, Jamala!
3. This wasn’t her first Eurovision.
In 2011, she participated in Ukraine’s selection for the Eurovision Song Contest. Jamala made it to the finals, but she withdrew from the competition due to a voting controversy. She returned in 2016 to win the whole thing!
4. She’s released 4 albums!
Jamala released For Every Heart in 2011, followed by All or Nothing, Thank You and Подих. A concert DVD, featuring Jamala, titled Live At Arena Concert Plaza, was released in 2012.
5. She rose to fame in 2009!
Jamala’s breakthrough in her music career came when she performed at the New Wave 2009 International Contest of Young Pop Singers. She won the grand prize for her incredible voice.
