James Gandolfini’s sudden death on June 19 devastated many, but none more so than his grieving family, including James’ 13-year-old son, Michael. A funeral service for the actor was held at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine in Manhattan’s Upper West Side June 27.
Hundreds gathered at the Cathedral Church of Saint John the Divine to celebrate James’ life.
During a heartbreaking moment, James’ 13-year-old son, Michael, is seen walking behind and touching the actor’s coffin, following the emotional service.
Inside, James’ wife Deborah Lin was the first family member to speak at the service, according to New York Daily News. She said:
My husband was an honest kind and loving man. He cared more about others than himself. He took the time to ask others in the course of the day how they were doing… Jim, one of the things I loved the most was watching you be the father that you were to Michael and Lily… Thank you for the memories of the beautiful life we shared together… I love you Jim and I always will. Rest in Peace.
James’ onscreen wife, Edie Falco, Sopranos creator David Chase and James’ TV daughter Jamie-Lynn Sigler attended the service with co-stars Steve Buscemi, Lorraine Bracco, Joe Pantoliano, Michael Imperioli, and John Ventimiglia. Alec Baldwin, Gov. Chris Christie, and New York Jets owner Woody Johnson also showed up to pay their respects to the New Jersey legend.
The actor, best known for playing mob king Tony Soprano on The Sopranos from 1999 to 2007, died of a heart attack June 19 while vacationing with his son in Italy. The actor was only 51.
It’s obvious that James was loved by many. He’ll surely be missed. Our thoughts go out to James’ family and friends during this difficult time.
