‘Vampire Diaries’ Recap: Elena Dances With Stefan, Danger At Prom

Plus, we finally got our first look as Silas’ real face! (Spoiler alert: He’s even fuglier than we imagined.)

In an attempt to convince Elena (Nina Dobrev) to turn her humanity back on, Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) attempted to overload her with emotions on the April 18 episode of The Vampire Diaries — and what better occasion to exploit a teenage girl’s feelings than  her senior prom? Unfortunately for the eternally clueless Salvatores, their little plan totally backfired, instead triggering their own dormant feelings about Elena… and each other. In other words, this love triangle is so back on.

Unfortunately for Damon, it looks like Stefan might win the eventual Tug-of-Elena, after all. Not only did Elena full-on deny that she’s Damon’s girlfriend — she told him that anything she felt for him was a result of the sire bond — but the heat between her and Stefan at prom was irrefutable. As they danced to Rihanna‘s “Stay,” which was a heavy-handed song choice in itself, Stefan reminded her of the intense history they share; and call me crazy, but I feel like he was starting to get through to her.

After a whole lot of vampire-on-witch drama — more on that later, I promise — the brothers managed to subdue Elena long enough to lock her up in the Salvatore dungeon, but not before Stefan stole one last lingering glance at his ex-girlfriend.

Caroline’s Second-Chance Dance

While prom night brought out the monster in some people — here’s lookin’ at you, Elena — it inspired a surprising level of compassion in Klaus (Joseph Morgan). Not only did he give Caroline (Candice Accola) a dress after Elena stole hers, but he actually let Tyler (Michael Trevino) return to Mystic Falls and share a special dance with his special lady!

… OK, I have may have exaggerated. Klaus didn’t exactly let Tyler come back, but he did give him a five-second head start to run away after he walked in on him dancing with Caroline. And when it comes to Klaus, that’s about as much compassion as you’re ever going to get.

Even though the moment was fleeting, I loved seeing Caroline and Tyler reunited. The look on her face when he walked into the room was priceless; she’s literally never been so happy. And to all you “Klaroline” shippers out there, I think it’s time to face the facts: Klaus is peacing out for the spin-off. We’ve all seen Buffy and Angel — long-distance relationships, especially between two different shows, are hopeless.

Rebekah’s Redemption

Rebekah (Claire Holt) got her first taste of life as a human this week, as Elijah (Daniel Gillies) promised she could have the cure if she could go an entire day without using her vampire powers. It was a very Little Mermaid kind of deal, except Elijah is way hotter than Ursula. And he has about six less arms.

But because Klaus is a huge baby who hates when things don’t go his way, he lashed out at Becky, promising to laugh in her face when she eventually gets sick and dies. (Whatever, I’ve made worse threats to my siblings.)

Anyhoo, Rebekah almost made it through her powerless day, until April (Grace Phipps) found herself in need of a little vamp blood. She was fully prepared to let April die — which I would have been fine with, as April is completely useless — until Matt (Zach Roerig) intervened, saying that saving April would be the most humane act Rebekah could possibly do. (Damn that Matt Donovan! Why does he have to be as noble as he is sexy?)

And because Silas can’t keep his gross little nose — more on that later — out of other people’s business, he impersonated Rebekah and claimed the cure from Elijah. … That’s right, folks; Silas now has the cure. And something tells me he ain’t giving it up without a fight.

Breaking Bonnie

Just when we thought we’d already seen Bonnie (Kat Graham) at her wit’s end, we learned we ain’t seen nothin’ yet. Because she had her memory wiped after her original encounter with Silas, Bon-Bon was forced to mourn Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen) all over again — which means we were forced to mourn him all over again, too. A special appearance from Jeremy sweetened the deal, until Bonnie realized she was dreaming, and that her freakin’ house was on fire.

The late, great Gilbert visited Bonnie again at prom to share a special dance — only this time, she was smart, and realized that “Jeremy” was actually Silas in disguise. Naturally, Bonnie stormed off in a pissy rage, which was only compounded by Elena trying to kill her. That’s when Bonnie showed everyone what expression magic can really do, as she reduced the almighty vampiress to a blubbering, bloody mess. I’m not gonna lie, it was nice seeing that pink-haired bitch finally get her comeuppance. Well deserved.

And while most of Mystic Falls High left the dance to get their drink on, Bonnie had a very different after-party on her schedule. She confronted Silas — the real Silas — in a cave, and finally got to see his face.

AND IT WAS SO GROSS! AAAAAAH!!!
