“Who am I? That’s one secret I’ll never tell.” Those now-iconic words have opened every episode of The CW’s Gossip Girl since it first premiered on Sept. 19, 2007. And while the omnipotent Upper East Side blogger kept that promise not to come out from behind the computer, “her” identity was revealed on the show’s Dec. 17 series finale nearly six years later.
Ready? Here it comes! Don’t say I didn’t warn you…
Gossip Girl is Dan Humphrey (Penn Badgley)!
Basically, we learned that Dan used Gossip Girl as a way to write himself into the lives of the Upper East Siders — all to get close to Serena (Blake Lively). The episode even featured a hilarious flashback scene in which everyone had to play younger versions of themselves. (Let’s just say some actors were more believable than others.)
Though the final episode featured several must-see moments — “Chair” fans went nuts when the first pictures leaked of Chuck and Blair (Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester) getting married in Central Park — the unveiling of the series’ titular villain was definitely its biggest moment. Without even a hint of exaggeration, Gossip Girl’s identity was literally the most anticipated reveal in teen-TV history. (Sorry, “A.”)
