Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev) may have every guy on The Vampire Diaries wrapped around her doppelfinger, but that doesn’t mean she’s the hottest ticket in Mystic Falls. That honor goes to Nina’s other vampire character, Katherine — at least as far as the show’s costume designer Leigh Leverett is concerned. “Katherine has been around for hundreds of years; She follows fashion trends a little more,” Leigh tells CNN. “[Her clothes are] edgier and sexier than what we put on Elena.”
While it’s mostly up to Nina to help the audience distinguish between her two characters, Leigh says the wardrobe department helps take care of the rest — though I can’t help but wonder how Elena’s style might change in season four now that she’s a member of the bloodsuckers club.
But Katherine’s not the only character whose wardrobe is enhanced due to her undead status! Leigh says she thinks about the vampires’ special abilities when dressing them — and she gets really creative.
“Maybe [the vampires] can compel the salespeople into giving them what they want,” she speculates. “I like to think that Katherine saw [the] tan Michael Kors heels[she wore during season 3] on some unsuspecting Chicago socialite, and probably just compelled her to hand them over.”
I like the way she thinks!
