Prince William and Kate Middleton‘s wedding was perfect in every way — except for the absence of William’s mother, Princess Diana.
The Prince opens up in The Jubilee Queen with Katie Couric — which airs May 29 at 9pm ET — about how devastated he was that his mother wasn’t there on his wedding day.
“It was the one time since she’s died where I’ve thought to myself it would be fantastic if she was here. And just how sad really, for her more than anything, not being able to see it,” he tells Katie Couric. “I think she would have loved the day and I think, hopefully, she’d be very proud of us both for the day. I’m just very sad that she’s never going to get a chance to meet Kate.”
And the feeling of sadness was the same for his brother Harry.
“I think she had the best seat in the house probably,” Harry says in the interview. “She would have loved to have been there.”
Prince William publicly made an effort to keep his mother part of the wedding process from the very beginning by giving Kate his mother’s blue oval sapphire and diamond engagement ring.
“It’s very special to me,” William told reporters after news of their engagement broke in November 2010.
Prince William was just 15 when his mother died in a tragic car accident on August 31, 1997.
And even though it had been over 10 years since her death on William and Kate’s wedding day in April 2011 — Princess Diana’s presence was still very strong that day in Westminster Abbey. Her funeral hymn was sung at their wedding service.
We can’t wait to watch the rest of the interview which airs tonight, May 29 at 9pm ET on ABC.
