Our hearts broke when we found out Jennie Garth and Peter Facinelli were separating after 11 years of marriage — but our emotions obviously paled in comparison to the private hell Jennie was going through. “I’ve never been this stressed in my life,” she tells People. “I’ve felt stress in the last couple of days like none before. I’m suffering from anxiety now. It feels like an elephant is sitting on your chest.”
Jennie also answers the question on everyone’s mind: Peter is the one who initiated the divorce.
“I tried everything I could to save our marriage,” Jennie tells the mag. “I was very resistent. I didn’t want it to happen. He did what he needed to do. … Of course I wish he had wanted to try harder, try again, try something else.”
She also admits that Peter’s sudden rise to fame — from the Twilight saga and his role on Showtime’s Nurse Jackie — changed him, which contributed to their split.
“Maybe he’s just hitting his stride as an actor and that’s interesting to him,” says Jennie, who also denies that Peter had an affair. “He deserves to do with that success whatever he wants to do with it. … We want different things now.”
But one of the hardest parts about the split, Jennie says, was having to initially hide it from their children.
“I would take the girls to school, then go back and get into bed and not get up again until it was time to pick them up from school,” Jennie reveals. “I had to pretend everything was fine.”
And Jennie says, despite everything, she still hasn’t given up hope.
“I have an amazing family in my girls, and in Peter,” she says. “That’s the fighter in me. … I don’t think I’ll ever give up on him.”
