Does dating down in age ever work out?
From ex-girlfriends Selena Gomez to his Les Miserables co-star Samantha Banks to Ms. Miley Cyrus, Nick Jonas has always dated in his age range. His tastes seem to have matured now that he’s at the ripe old age of 18 — the youngest Jo Bro is dating 8-years-older singer Delta Goodrem over the weekend! Can a relationship between them work?
Nick was spotted leaving the ArcLight cinema in LA May 15 with the 26-year-old Australian songbird, who, up until recently, was engaged to Westlife singer Brian McFadden. If Nick’s following day tweet was any indication, things are going well between the two, regardless of their staggering age difference. “I feel so blessed,” he wrote. “Had a great weekend.”
OK, so the two are having fun now, but can this May-December romance actually last?
I’m sorry, but no, these two won’t last. Sure, they have more of a shot than most couples with an 8-year-age difference do, but that’s by a slim margin. It’s in Nick’s favor that he’s been part of a successful band, the Jonas Brothers, and has so much life experience by 18. He, at least, can identify with Delta.
However, if you’re an average 26-year-old woman dating an average 18-year-old guy, how much are you really going to have in common? He’ll just be graduating high school, while you’ve been in the working world for potentially 8+ years (4+ if you went to college). It’s hard to talk about life with your partner when he hasn’t doesn’t much living yet.
If you don’t mind being his teacher, and showing him things about the world, then be my guest — date a younger guy. But if the thought bores you — as it should — then find someone your own age or even a bit older instead. Find someone who can show you a thing or two.
