LAURA'S LOVE LIFE ADVICE: Should You Congratulate An Ex On His Engagement? Jessica Hasn't Reached Out To Nick!

Reading Time: 2 minute

Nick Lachey just got engaged to his longterm girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo — but his ex-wife hasn’t congratulated the happy couple on their big news. Should she?

Jessica Simpson may be totally head over heels for new boyfriend Eric Johnson, but somehow methinks she’ll be less than pleased that her ex-husband is beating her to the altar. Although news only broke yesterday that Nick Lachey and his longtime girlfriend Vanessa Minnillo are engaged, Jess hasn’t reached out to congratulate the two yet. But does she have to?

If Jess, 30, wants to be the bigger person — then YES, the appropriate thing to do would be to give Nick, 36, her blessing. The exes seem to have remained civil, despite the fact that Jess doesn’t quite seem to be a fan of her former husband’s fiancee. Even if she’s less than thrilled about the engagement, she should suck it up and pretend to be happy for them.

But does Jess’ situation apply to YOUR life? Well, it depends on how things ended with your ex-boyfriend or ex-hubby. If you two are friendly, then of course you have to offer your congratulations. Don’t go over the top — there’s no need to send flowers or a gift. A simple phone call will do. And yes, it’s OK to secretly hope he doesn’t pick up so you can leave a message!

If things ended badly, then NO, you do NOT have to put yourself out there. If he broke your heart and got engaged to the girl after you, it’s totally fine to commiserate with your girlfriends and have yourself a good, old cry.

As for Jess, although reports claim she is “saddened” by Nick’s news, my guess is she’s not crying over the loss of her former husband, but is just waiting for that day that Eric is going to pop a big, fat, shiny diamond ring on HER finger. Can you blame her?
