It’s the biggest food time of the year, but that doesn’t mean you have to go off your low carb diet to enjoy the holidays!
Charlotte Smythe, founder of the food blog Confessions of a Clean Foodie and partner with the #AtkinsSmallWins campaign has tips to stay on track and still enjoy yourself this holiday season!
Look For Smart Substitutions
Substituting some ingredients for low carb options in your favorite dishes is a great place to start. If you love macaroni and cheese, make a version of that with cauliflower. I also really enjoy a good homemade green bean casserole.
Another great swap out-- instead of the canned cranberry sauce, make a berry sauce with fresh or frozen strawberries, raspberries, blueberries and add some monk-fruit to sweeten it up a bit and fresh citrus to really bring out all those flavors.
Portions Are Important
Eat your meals on a smaller plate. Then, fill it up with different veggies or veggie-packed dishes and protein. This way by the time you get to the mash potatoes, you'll have space for a little scoop, if you’re really craving it.
Skip the Traditions If It’s Not Your Favorite
If I’m not craving it, I’ll skip it all together. It’s a small step, but, it’s truly those small habits we build that will help through special times like the holidays when everyone around you is indulging.
It’s Ok If Christmas Is Your ‘Cheat Day’
When you are trying to sustain a healthier lifestyle, it’s important to focus on balance and building good habits. Don’t focus on depriving yourself. Have that treat and enjoy it to the fullest. Then for your very next meal, move on and choose better options.
