It might sound like a trick, but there actually are some treats you can enjoy on Halloween without totally ruining your diet!
We spoke with registered dietitian nutritionist, Kristin Kirkpatrick, to get a better idea on how people can make better choices on Halloween.
For starters, Kristin explains that on Halloween, a lot of people can fall into the trap of ‘snack size’ candy.
While one could think that snack size will contain less sugar which IS healthier, even a snack size candy will be high in sugar and you may actually eat several pieces and even more than if you were to go with the standard size.”
“The biggest misconception is that snack-size candy is “healthier” for you.
That being said, there are some options that could help you curve the cravings without being deprived. The key is to enjoy candy options that have more protein, and minimal sugar.
I love recommending Quest mini Peanut Butter Cups and Quest Gooey Caramel Candy Bites. I recommend them to my patients as the perfect way to get your candy craving satisfied without the sugar. Even better, they contain abundantly more protein and fiber than traditional candy.”
“If you prefer traditional candy, opting for at least one of those to have a little fiber (such as nut-based candy) may help in filling you up quicker, meaning, you may eat less overall.”
There’s still a way to stay on track.
And if you want to splurge on Halloween?
“Chewing thoroughly has been found to assist with mindful eating as well. Try not to mindlessly snack on high-sugar foods as this can quickly add up to an additional 500 calories a day.”
